Operating Systems
Mobile OS
These are often offspring of the Android core (there are notable exceptions). So, basically De-Googled Open Sourced Android distributions.
PC OS
Linux and UNIX(except Mac) are generally considered privacy safe in the sense that your information is not required or distributed.
Good replacements for your all round everyday PC could be one of the following 3 flavors of Linux Systems.
Ubuntu or Debian, both build on the Debian distribution. Ubuntu is probably one of the most popular Linux distributions.
Fedora, based on the RedHat distribution. Also a very popular Laptop solution.
Manjaro, a very popular and user friendly version of the Arch distribution (renowned for it’s high technical requirements to setup and maintain).
Privacy focused Linux distributions
If you require next-level security and privacy for certain tasks. The following options may be well suited.
Tails OS – Very handy and easy OS installed and booted from a USB-drive. Great for fast and secure privacy option. Route traffic through Tor. By default every boot is on a clean system, with the drawback of profiles and files are lost by default. There are solutions to this, but by default this is how Tails work.
Whonix OS – Another solution that are very secure. But, a bit more tedious to setup for normies. It’s is usually installed as two virtual machines, one as a Tor onion proxy, the other as the separate network isolated OS. This setup can be considered more as a daily work horse.
On the more extreme and paranoid side, but also to some extend of the cost of learning curve, setup and complexity Qubes OS is probably considered as one of the safest.
There are other privacy focused OS’s out there. But, be sure to do your research before choosing. How active and large is the supporting community, when was the latest release, what does other people say about the OS.
